Brighton Festival Youth Choir

About BFYC

Since its formation in January 2002, the Brighton Festival Youth Choir has fast become one of the leading youth choirs in the UK. The group's first performance was a live broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Since then it has been in great demand, working with acclaimed ensembles including the RPO, LPO , the Philharmonia, the City of London Sinfonia, the Brodsky Quartet and L’Orchestra National de Lorraine under such conductors as Richard Hickox, Jacques Mercier and James Morgan.

Highlights include performing to an audience of thousands at Leeds Castle with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic conducted by Carl Davis, performing at the O2 in 2009 in a spectacular performance of Carmina Burana and performing the world premiere of Howard Goodall's The Selfish Giant in the opening concert of the International Brighton Festival 2010. The choir has undertaken three foreign tours to Prague and Belgium, winning a silver cup in the Verona International Choir Competition during their 2008 tour to Italy.

The choir has a growing discography, having sung on Classic FM’s Songs without Words which entered the charts in the top 20 in 2008. They also appear on Poetry Serenade (Signum Classics) released in 2009 and on the sound track for the re-make of the iconic film Brighton Rock (in association with BBC Films) starring Helen Mirren.

The aims of the choir are to be one of the pre-eminent youth choirs of its type in the country, to provide for its members the opportunity to receive first class training under its director, Esther Jones, and to participate in performances of the highest quality, working with orchestras, choirs and conductors of international acclaim. The members are trained as singers and musicians as well as part of a choir.
